featuring singer Etta James,
portrayed by Beyonce in the film Cadillac
Records. The interview originally
aired on July 1, 1995.
Years ago, most DJ-oriented radio
stations published weekly hit sheets, or surveys, that you could pick
up at a local music shop. Printed under the stations'
logos were the lists of the week's top hits. The most
interesting of these surveys are the ones with the longest
list of records. Some have as many as a hundred or more,
giving you an idea of just how much music you could hear on
commercial radio then. We've
collected hundreds of these survey sheets from soul and pop
stations all over the country, dating from the late 50s
through the 80s. Some of
these rare items are now available for viewing. (If you have any lying around that you'd like to
share with us, let us know.)
PARTY PEOPLE
Here
they are ... photos from the September
dance, plus the archive from the '07-'08
season of Rhythm Revues at Roseland. Photographer
Ron Terner captures the heart and soul of New
York's funkiest dance party. Feel the love
(and check out the styles). Were you there?

Here are the roots of soul.
This incredible performance is one of few caught
on film by the Original Five Blind Boys of
Alabama, featuring Clarence Fountain. Unlike
innumerable gospel singers who recorded R&B (Sam
Cooke, Lou Rawls, Laura Lee, Johnnie Taylor,
Aretha Franklin, to name a few), Fountain and his
group never "crossed over." Previous videos of the week
